Who of us, on undertaking an important journey, begin by consulting maps and/or guidebooks? In addition we also consult with others who have gone this way before to be sure that we don’t miss the things that we want to see because of losing our way or being unsure of which way to turn. The more dangerous the journey the more vital it is to have experienced guides to accompany us along the way. One would never think of climbing Mount Everest without a compliment of Sherpa guides. So, too, when one enters onto the spiritual pathway, a guide can make all the difference.
A spiritual director or spiritual guide is one, who in a one-to-one relationship, listens, with love, the love of the Holy Spirit, to the other (the directee), who shares an account of his or her journey to a fuller life in God. Like prayer, contemplation and meditation, a spiritual guide nourishes the spiritual aspect of being human and allowing one’s spirituality to be shared with others.
Spiritual Direction is a precious time when you take time to recognize the presence of the Holy in your everyday life and are helped to contemplate and savour those moments. These graced moments can transform you, body, soul, mind and spirit.
